Tomorrow night (5th Sept) a fundraiser with a difference is taking over Bristol’s pioneering twenty-first century theatre, The Old Vic, a fundraiser in the form of a night of “music from films”. All moneys raised by the event will be going towards The Cube, “Bristol’s legendary independent one stop culture centre” & self styled “microplex”, currently embarked on a mission to buy the building it’s been housed in (and has made its own) for the last 15 years.
The Cube has built up an amazing reputation for itself over the last few years as it’s been the go to venue for some of the cities most inimitable, unique & independent productions, films, talks, comedy, live music & etc etc etc – the list goes on. Should the city lose the Cube it’d be a massive blow for the heart & soul of independent Arts in the city so, when The Cube were told the owners of the building they’d called home for so long (the place has been the home to arts events since the 60′s, long before it became known as The Cube) intended to sell the building when the lease expired it must’ve seemed like a no-brainer for them to at least try to buy the lease.
Thanks to the Arts council offering to give The Cube £90,000 towards it’s target of £185,000, reaching their goal is now a definite possibility. The cities artists & fans of art have been rallying around putting on fundraisers & generally trying to raise awareness of the venture which brings us to tomorrow nights event.
Titled Don’t Look Now: Music From Films (obviously after the great Nic Roeg film starring Julie Christie and Donald Sutherland) the event will be bringing together some of the cities most well known musicians at the fabulous Old Vic for “An epic night of musical attractions, famous OSTs, guest artists, huge orchestras and cult actors.”
Quoting from the press release:
The idea is pretty damn simple. A cluster of musicians from Bristol and beyond (but forever close to the Cube’s very heart and soul) will gather together to perform a key Original Sound Track or selection of OSTs.
From simple beautiful minimalist pieces, through songs sung in French and thunderous urban sheets of sonic drama to the grand, emotional sweep of Morricone’s master works, this will be a evening of adventure, fun and passion.
Hosting the parade of musicians & film scores will be “the maverick raconteur and legend of Cube occasions past, Dudley Sutton, who has graced many a screen and stage in his illustrious acting career.”
Artists taking part will include:
The Greatness Of The Magnificence who’ll be putting together a 30 piece orchestra led by Jesse Morningstar (The Moonflowers, Morningstar, This Is The Kit). They’ll mainly be performing music from Sergio Leone’s films.
Pinch & Bass Clef Legends of dubstep who’ve now moved on to be two of the most unique bass explorers in the country will be doing wonderful things & adding extra dimensions to the music from Robocop.
François (from François and the Atlas Mountains) will be conjuring up a special locally-sourced band to play the lush, sensual songs from Claude Lelouch’s A Man And A Woman.
Goan Dogs w/ Elly McCabe Goan Dogs, who we featured as a New Artist of the Day here & harpist Elly McCabe will be putting their own spin on the music from Edward Scissorhands. With extra instruments and props from The Insects, much is expected. “This music will touch you, even though he can’t”.
I Know I Have No Collar The cult Bristol band will be doing what they can to render the music of Hal Hartley’s films in an unforgettable manner.
