We are sorry to have to report the death of Dave Jennings – former Melody maker and NME writer who died suddenly aged 54.

I knew Dave when I was writing for Melody Maker and got to know him fairly well and he was a gentle and quietly passionate soul who loved music and wrote about music untarnished by fashion and any of the other distractions. He would champion bands like the Wedding Present despite them being considered uncool at the time!

From the same school of writing as Steve Lamacq – that world of dredging the pub circuit for the undiscovered egems of talent Dave was one of those writers who lived for the music and would always be supportive of new bands and use his position to encourage them.

Famously it was Dave who inadvertantly named Daft Punk back in 1993 via a review of their earlier act Darlin’.
