It’s not often at something as tightly controlled as the Master Bates Brit Awards that anyone is allowed to cut loose and say what they feel. After all feel is the last thing this rampaging white elephant of an awards ceremony is about.
Coke bloated dickie bows patting each other on the back in an awards ceremony that is closer to The Wolf Of Wall Street than anything to do with music is the order of the day so Arctic Monkeys singer Alex Turner’s off the cuff speech about how ‘rock n roll will never die’ was oddly quite a powerful moment – he may have been drunk, he may have been rambling but it sounded like sheer poetry in motion when surrounded by arrogant empty bluster and hoo ha of the modern music biz.
What did you think? seas it something that needed to be said or should they have humbly picked up the award like grateful northern serfs?
Alex Turner’s speech in full…
“That rock ‘n’roll, eh? That rock’n'roll, it just won’t go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists demands that acquiesce to some of its rules.
“But it’s always waiting there, just around the corner,” he added. “Ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock’n'roll, it seems like it’s faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there’s nothing you can do about it.” He then told organisers to “invoice me for the microphone if you wanna” before dropping it on the floor.
