Peter Hook, the legendary bassman from Joy Division and New Order has just released his critically acclaimed account of those Joy Division years, Unknown Pleasures. The book is a great read- funny and poignant and really evokes the era of the classic band.
We asked him for his top ten favourite albums…
Lou Reed – Berlin
The most melancholy album of all time, brings a lump to my throat every time I hear it, beautiful.
Nico – Chelsea Girls
Wonderful orchestration by John Cale, some of the edgiest music I have ever heard.
Ian Dury – New Boots & Panties
A great wordsmith, and this LP is what LPs are all about, you lose yourself into another world.
Everything Everything – Man Alive
Modern music at its best, it draws from the best Manchester has to offer and comes up with something completely new.
Led Zeppelin- III
One of my favourite rock/folk albums ever
John Cale – Paris 1919
Chilling to listen to, really sets your teeth on edge.
Malcolm Mclaren – Madame Butterfly
I put this in because I heard it the other day and it reminds me of a wonderful night at the opera in Birmingham, but Malcolm did this so well, he was a genius…
Sex Pistols – Never Mind The Bollocks
This is where it all started for me, will always hold a very very big place in my heart and in my ears.
Iggy & The Stooges – Metallic KO
The best live rock album ever made in my opinion, to hear the glass crashing is fantastic, reminds me of early gigs of my own.
Joy Division – Closer
The only album I’ve ever done that I can sit and listen to myself for pleasure, it really is a beautiful record.
