Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Islington Academy, London
15 July 2013
Our man Keith Goldhanger catches the Yeah Yeah Yeahs doing a warm up show down his local ahead of their Latitude Festival slot this coming weekend.
Monday nights used to consist of Ask the family,Opportunity Knocks, The High Chaparral and Call My Bluff. OK, we were only eleven and dreamt one day of that big city called London that may not have had pavements made of gold but did promise things out of the blue such as big bands playing down the local.
OK, the Islington Academy may not be the smallest venue in the capital but seven to eight hundred is intimate enough compared with the big stages we’re used to seeing the Yeah Yeah Yeahs on nowadays.
A late arranged warm up show before the weekends Latitude performance bought us hit after hit after rarely-performed-with-two-false-starts Wedding Song, after hit with glitter, glamour, sing-a-longs and hands in the air moment from the off.
Is Karen O the most wonderful front person in the world at the moment? -Probably, even if she does look a bit like Gary Glitter at the start. However once THAT leather jacket goes on we’re back in showbiz land and realising that big bands on small stages can be a brilliant but all too rare occasion nowadays.
YEAAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ACE.
They played:
- BANG
- BLACK TONGUE
- UNDER THE EARTH
- GOLD LION
- SLAVE
- CHEATED HEARTS
- SUBWAY
- WEDDING SONG
- ZERO
- TURN INTO
- DESPAIR
- ART STAR
- SACRILEGE
- HEADS WILL ROLL
- MAPS
- DATE WITH THE NIGHT
