Press release
Being Frank: The Chris Sievey story is the official documentary about Manchester alternative comedian Frank Sidebottom, and his creator Chris Sievey.
It is being made with the support of Chris’ family and will be shown in cinemas during 2014.
The film will explore Chris’ life and art, including his work as the maverick performer Frank Sidebottom, and Chris’ music career including post-punk Manchester band The Freshies.
While he was alive, Frank Sidebottom’s true identity was a closely guarded secret, but for the first time Chris Sievey’s family, close friends and colleagues are prepared to discuss this innovative, wayward genius and explain why he chose to spend 28 years wearing a papier mache head and letting Frank steal his limelight.
Being Frank will also feature the very best archive footage of Chris and Frank, sourced from hundreds of hours of footage from Chris’ own archive of Super 8 film, VHS tapes and DVDs.
The film is being directed by award-winning filmmaker Steve Sullivan. Steve, originally from Preston, made a documentary of Frank Sidebottom’s Magical Timperley Tour in 2007. Steve and Chris planned to work together again, but Chris sadly lost his battle with cancer in 2010.
Chris Sievey was an innovator and an independent artist, who was as comfortable working outside of the mainstream on the northern club circuit as he was appearing on TV shows such as Number 73, or Remote Control with Tony Wilson.
The film is being funded by the fans on the crowd funding website Kickstarter during May 2013. Please visit the project page for a video explaining the fundraising and the film:
Kickstarter is an innovative new approach to funding arts projects, where many people are asked to contribute a small amount, but through mass support large amounts are raised. Fans will be able to pre-order their own copy of the film as a digital download, a DVD or a High Definition Blu Ray disc, and this will provide the rest of the funding needed to finish the film.
Who was Frank Sidebottom? It’s time to take off the head.
