It’s a freezing cold night and my hands are like blocks of ice. I’m sat in the Ducie Bridge pub- yet another great live venue in Manchester, a city with more venues than any other in Europe. There are about 8 of us here and about two of us have come for the Bluebottle Veins- who are the best young band in the UK right now.
We are the lucky ones, in years to come I will be telling people about this gig like I bore people about seeing Nirvana play to 15 people in New York or the Stone Roses play to less in Manchester. The Bluebottle Veins have got it all- they have a whole set of great songs- livid blues licks, garage shuffles and tight rock n roll songs that have great tunes and a great energy that defies the empty room. the songs and the playing is enough to cut through the gloom but when one of singers starts singing starts you heart soars- it’s the most perfect rock n roll voice, a helium marc Bolan that soars with magic and sends the band to the stratosphere, underlining their knack for great songs.
Imagine, if you will, the great god Bolan jamming with the White Stripes and you may get some idea of what’s going here. It’s that magical and that brilliant but don’t be fooled, there’s more to the Bluebottle Veins than that glib comparison- they have two singers and the contrast works really well and their playing is great- there is some really good guitar stuff going on. They also have a tight and heavy rhythm section that belies its small town rock roots and they also have their own wilful idea of what they are doing and are writing new songs in a rush and the north Wales band are on the brink of breaking out. The whisper that was started here on Louder Than War last month with a new band piece has turned into a scream and labels are sniffing- check them out now before they break out…
