The news today that the timelord himself, Dr Who, is despairing of the despicable villains – the ‘poultry farmers’ and their ruination of his local football club Blackburn Rovers is both justifiable and frankly a bit mind boggling.
It’s hard to believe that the timelord is a Blackburn fan, in all of the universe he surely could have found another club but we respect his decision to go local because that’s the sign of a true fan.
His calling of the current owners, the Venkys. ‘numpties’ and his outburst seems reminiscent of some kind of Dr. Who script with the parasitical behavior of the baddies taking things over unnoticed manifested in football. Is up to the good doctor to fight these evil villains himself or is it time to wake up and face that fact that clubs like Blackburn, Blackpool and Birmingham City are being screwed by portfolio millionaires who treat clubs like hobbies whilst the fans wring their hands and despair?
Our national sport is inching towards a crisis with bad ownership which is about to cost us dear. Surely you don’t have to be a timelord to notice that this madness is unsustainable and that bad ownership, that seems to swerve the ‘fit and proper’ proposals once put forward about ownership of clubs is being swerved on a daily basis. It can’t be far off when we start losing clubs because the rich get bored of their playthings and even a true fan would hate to see their bitterest rival go to the wall.
Being a Blackpool fan I’m one of many who are baffled by the way the owners, the Oyston family, run the club (into the ground), the millions from the premiership parachute money the club received after relegation never seems to find it way back into the club or the local community and the fans are left cut adrift from the ownership of the club.
Of course I’m not naive enough to realise that this is not a charity and that clubs are a business, but surely this business excuse seems more like smokescreen for arrogance and incompetence and that a club like Blackpool with a pitch that is so awful I wouldn’t even fancy a kick about on it let alone a professional football game can’s be allowed to be run like it is. Is this the future? or can we have a future of fan involvement clubs like Swansea or in Germany?
There are many clubs now in the same sinking boat, the millions that went into football seems to be going straight out again and into the bulging back pockets of a rich elite whilst the loyal fan sits there baffled, getting screwed, wondering whether the season ticket they are buying is for their club or some strange name PLC.
It’s a bit like the way the bankers wrecked our economy whilst giving themselves a big fat bonus- the greed and the stupidity of the people that run the world is mind boggling and football presents an opportunity to see how crazed these people are.
Surely a football club should be part of its local community, a beacon of hope in a small town, a focal point that is part of its local space and not a place to generate millions for a distant lord to shove into their bulging back pockets.
Is it time for football to be regulated before it goes bust? are Time Lords right about dodgy owners? is it time for our national sport to grow up?
